Here are three photos I took on Sunday. They are all of some boats I saw moored at the edge of Loch Venachar. This first one, captures the mooring and the numbers which really caught my eye.
The fact the boats are numbered rather than named makes them seem especially utilitarian, doesn’t it? “Come in Number 17! Your time is up!”
This next one I took by zooming in on the middles of the boats. This emphasises their colour, their worn surfaces and their shapes. It’s not all that clear, at first glance, that these are actually boats.
Finally, this last shot includes the loch itself, with all the reflections.
Which of these different views do you like best, and why?
Heroes Not Zombies 
I like the first one. Guess I want to know what the subject is. I love the color and the stacked look for the bows against the dock.
The second one is okay. Would be a good one for a series on a wall though. Maybe with both ends of the boats before and after. 🙂
The last one is cool but would have liked to have seen it in a wider view.
Of course, these are my views. YMMV

I like the first image best, and I think the reason it appeals to me so is that, at first glimpse, all the boats seem the same. Take a second to look closer, though, and you’ll see that NONE of them is the same – they all have different qualities and characteristics. Someone’s tried to make them anonymous – the numbers are a powerful statement, aren’t boats usually named? – but, like people, the boats resist homogenization, even if that resistance is in the form of a paint chip here or a different tie-rope there.

I like the first one best. It caught my eye right away. In fact, I came to comment on it before reading the post. I think it’s composed very well. I love the bold colors and the graphic quality of the numbers. I like how the boats are all a jumble, next to the straight line of the dock. I like the angle of the dock across the frame. It’s a great shot – nicely done!
