We construct our sense of self, and we experience our own very unique lives through the tool of narrative. Narrative means the story and the way its told. This is something I look for all the time during my consultations. I’m interested to notice not just the words people use but the tone of voice, the speed of speech, the hesitations, the facial expressions and the body language. The way a story is told is actually what gives the content of a story its meaning.
Have a look at this short French film (English subtitles)
It’s brilliant. Starts bland, with words that don’t convey much, but with a small piece of direction the words are said again in an entirely different way and WHAM – if it doesn’t get you, I’ll be surprised! (Well, it got me sniffing anyway!)
Tell me what you think. How aware are you of the way you say things? How aware are you of the way things are said to you?
that is powerful, for sure. thanks for sharing!
It’s true and if we are aware of how we speak than it means we know better ourselves. and if we pay attention to how the other communicates we know something about this person too. I try to be always aware of the way I approach the people by talking and sometimes i am satisfied sometimes i really tell myself “you shoud improve much more”. One of the main focus in my life its that i am determined to reach a high standard of communication by words. I think the quality of the words, the manner which accompanies this quality is more important than how many words we are saying. we can speak a couple of words only but the innate power within them can have an immediate reaction.
It’s great isn’t it? Ester. Good to see you. Hope you’re doing well.
Thank you for this thoughtful comment radha. As a doctor I’ve had many experiences that make me very aware of the power of what we say. I do think what a doctor says and how he or she says it can have enormous consequences for a patient. Life and death consequences. That’s a great motivation for always trying to improve communication I can tell you!
I think your patients are fortunate to have you as doctor ~
Wow! Thank you radha. You are very kind
