Why’s the moon lying on it’s back?
I’m sure there’s a simple explanation for this but I’m so used to seeing the crescent phases of the moon looking like a “C” (or an inverted “C”) that it really struck me as odd when I saw it sitting up there like a smile!
(taken in Provence on February 27th)

Beautiful.
I have no idea why the moon looks as it does here; I’m sure there’s some scientific explanation, though, that will suck all the wonder from it, so I prefer to appreciate rather than investigate. Sometimes, ignorance really IS bliss…
Funny that. I pointed out the moon on its back at about the same time during my recent holiday to california , and assumed it was due to the tilt in the earths axis ( or something along those lines) But on its back in Provence at the same time as well…. now that really has got me confused!
How unusual! And beautiful, of course.
My explanation (since my main frame of reference is literary rather than scientific) is that it isn’t the moon at all. It’s what’s left of the cheshire cat…
