This large trailer of lavender was parked on the Cours in Aix, and the scent was strong well down the street. Scents embed memories deeply into our minds. What scents stimulate the strongest memories for you?

I welcome constructive criticism and suggestions. I will not, however, tolerate abuse, rudeness or negativity, whether it is directed at me or other people. It has no place here. ANYONE making nasty comments will be banned.Archives

Jonah Leherer talks about this ..the science of memory of smell and taste (Proust’s biscuit!)
For me its the fear smell of rock fall which is acrid and like gunpowder and if I smell it , reminds me of a narrow escape in the Alps. Smells of A+E remind me of when I fainted there as a child. The smell of stale tobacco and beer remind me of lots of experiences in the east end of Glasgow.
The smell of ‘genuine’ bakeries remind me of lots of places …French bakeries , Yorkshire , preparing endless pizzas in a Glasgow close for our wedding……….The smell of babies takes me back to the nurturing of our own……..The smell of rain before the storm takes me back to kayaking across to Rum on a flat calm sea ……….The smell of a primary classroom …….
I am sure the olfractory system can contain memories of pleasure , pain, fear and formative experiences ………….The scent of Brut and you may think of Barry Sheene or Henry Cooper if you are of a certain age or belong to certain culture or watched TV commericals in the 70’s!?
Lovely comments ian my Dad gave me a book he was reading before he passed away , he smoked a lot a smell i have always hated ,however i started reading this book recently and it smells of him , it conjures up vivid images of him lying in bed at night smoking a smell i now find comforting , interestingly the book is a true account of the Lufftwaffes finest interogator a gentle man who against the wishes of his superiors used kindness and hummility to glean information from his captors , last week i read in a back copy of the New Scientist that these techniques are now scientifically proven to be more successful than those employed in Abu Garibh and Guantanamo Bay . How stupid we are !
