What is it about boats? So many people have such a fascination for them. These ones in the harbour at Cassis were such beautiful colours. Aren’t they lovely?
How about you? Do you like to be beside the seaside?
What do boats mean to you?
Hi, Doc! It’s been a busy weekend, but I’m back.
I have a strange relationship with the sea. Growing up, as I did, in coastal New England, I feel an almost biological need to be near the ocean. I feel uneasy in the mountains, and I was absolutely miserable for the school year that I lived in Vermont – I was keenly aware of being landlocked.
The funny thing is, though, I don’t have a very intimate relationship with the ocean. New England beaches are not especially lovely – the sand is coarse and rocky and gray, the water amazingly cold and dark, with bits of seaweed and things that cling creepily to one’s ankles (while one can still feel them, of course – by the time you’re in it up to your knees, you’ve pretty much lost communication with your feet). There are no colorful shells to hold one’s attention. No, I’ve had MUCH lovelier times at others’ beaches – particularly on the Gulf coast of Florida – but I still need to be near the ocean to feel at home.
I’m fine on a boat that’s MOVING, but once the engine is cut and the bobbing starts, Mrs. Chili gets seasick. Bleh…
Boats, i was born surrounded by boats! my grampa a fisherman and sailorman, i grw up playing on teh beach hiding behind wooden hand painted boats….lots of good memories, i love boats, i should paint a beautiful boat soon too 🙂
i didn’t know that about beaches in New England, mrschili. Scotland is blessed with many simply gorgeous beaches (but not much gorgeous weather to go with them!)
I really liked how these boats had been painted radha – do you mean you’re going to paint a painting of a boat? or you are going to paint a boat? Either way, I’d love to see the result
