Some ten years ago my daughter lived way up in the very north west corner of Scotland – just outside Durness. There was a local pottery run by a woman called Lotte Glob. Her work was really not like any other pottery I’d ever seen. As well as making cups and utility pottery (but quite exquisite and each piece totally unique), she gathered materials from the ground around where she lived, mixed them into works art and placed the art back into the landscape where she’d gathered the material. The idea completely caught my imagination. Over a few trips we collected a number of cups. I love how underneath each one is just two words “far north”.
Here are some of them –
She has an exhibition currently and she’s published a beautiful book about her “floating stones” project.
I saw her exhibition at the Watermill Bookshop in Aberfeldy last weekend. It was stunning. Look at this simple tile for just one example –

Those things look well suited to the “far north.” Solid, sturdy, and beautiful in their own squat way… much like myself, I think…

I have one of her mugs…and I’d say that they are well suited to the north west of scotland BUT I wouldn’t say they are solid and sturdy, as they are light and dainty and a joy to hold, this i think is reflective of the lightness that you feel when you are up there, as if you’re in another part of the world completely, away from the busy and hectic life of the city…but that may just be me…
…do you know if she still does the mugs? I may venture up there again sometime hopefully soonish š
Iona, I don’t think Lotte does the mugs at all any more.
I’m sure I heard that she isn’t selling anything directly any more. The Aberfeldy Watermill Bookshop (google them!) both exhibits and sells her work but I think its mainly art items now.
*weeps into a pillow* they are the best size for cappuccino though…booo…thank you for replying though š aaaand I probably will check out the Watermill at some point in the future š
I have a Lotte Glob teapot and matching pair of cups from approximately 14 years ago. They were given to my husband and me by a family friend for our wedding. Last year, I emailed Lotte with photos of the set to confirm that she had made them. She had.
We don’t use the set any longer for fear of damaging something valuable, but I really have no idea what the set’s value is…
I bought a few lovely pieces by Lotte Glob in the 1980s.
– A large jug, a candlestick holder, 6 beautiful mugs, a sugar bowl cream jug, I missed the tea pot! a pot for the oven with soup bowls. I treasure each piece and was hoping that she might still be making and selling the odd piece of pottery
