Looking through my photo library I came across the pictures I took of what I still think is the most spectacular rainbow I’ve ever seen.
I took it when I lived in the Charente, in a house which overlooked the vineyards. There were many glorious sunsets there, but, rarely, any rainbows.
But just look at this one! What made it so distinctive was how the colour of the world under the rainbow was so different from the rest of the sky. I’d never seen that before.
Here’s another picture, not a great exposure, but gives you a sense of what I was looking at….

I mean….is that glorious, or what?
I often write about the value of finding wonder in the everyday…..or “l’émerveillement du quotidien”, as the French say, and, often I find a flower, a butterfly, a tree which stops me in my tracks and gives me pause to wonder, but, sometimes what I encounter is just a whole other level of spectacular.
This was one of those days.
I’ve never seen that phenomenon since. Have you ever seen that? Where the sky below the rainbow changes colour?
Oh, and when I think of rainbows, I always hear a Kacey Musgraves song in my head – here it is –
