I love this kind of forest. It’s a very typical, not man-made, Scottish forest. I love it when the forest floor of ferns turns this amazing coppery brown colour

The forest floor ferns add so much. Certainly more unusual than US forest floors. Nice.
Give me a stone or log, or non-prickly spot so I can sit, and be still. I love to sit quietly and let the wildlife decide I must be ok. I’ve had a copperhead (poisonous, but beautiful) pass right beside my leg on the way to the farmer’s pond in the Summer as a kid. I could have lazily brushed its scales with my hand easily if I’d wanted to. The snake was intent on cooling off in the water though, and I was in no danger. I’d gone there to do an impressionist sketch with colored pencils of the pond and plants around it, I was sitting in the shade, looking around and soaking in the colors. “Statueing” can be fun, but it takes practice. Of course, being so still for prolonged periods can bring chagrin too. I am thinking of the specific time I was sketching the sunset (sitting on the ground with a clump of grass on three sides of me, screening me) in a different farmer’s field, and was so absorbed in my work I wasn’t aware the farmer had let his dairy cows out into the field. They’d wandered quite near me. Gave me a start! I was more careful after that, and never assumed the cowbells were coming on the wind from the barn across the field.
Thankyou for sharing that Kat. I think Christopher (of slowdownnow) would really like that story.
Thankyou Barbara. Not all the forest floors in Scotland are like this of course, but we do have a lot covered in ferns this way.
