Contrasts

light and dark

There is something dramatic about rain clouds passing through.

But what really caught my eye here was the contrast – the contrast between the dark vineyard and the blue sky with the soft white clouds, and the contrast between that part of the sky and the dark, heavy, rain-laden cloud above it.

We need contrasts……bright, fine light and deep darkness too.

The rhythm of light and darkness experienced by us all grounds our very existence not in constancy and sameness, but in perpetual change and difference.

Vive la difference!

Go!

jet

In the A to Z of Becoming, one of the verbs starting with G, is GO!

Every day I look up into the sky and see a mass of jet trails as planes fly from south to north, north to south, and sometimes in other directions too! I often wonder where the people are going.

Where are you going to go this year?

Physically. Are you going to go back again to somewhere you’ve been before and visit it with fresh eyes? Are you going to go and explore somewhere you’ve never been? I love to travel. It always changes my world, gives me a chance to reflect from a completely different vantage point. I hope you can have that experience too.

I don’t think you need to go far to have that kind of experience, and I don’t think you necessarily have to make it a long visit. Even a day trip can be not only a pause, but a turning point.

Just choose somewhere different from where you usually live, and GO!

But thinking about this verb, “go”, brings up something else for me too. Not just travel and visiting different places, but doing what your heart longs for.

What does your heart long for? What are the dreams you have for this life? Have you started to listen to what your heart says? Have you started to give the universe the chance to make your dreams come true?

None of that is going to happen if you are just waiting…..waiting for the “right” time, the “right” opportunity, or until this or that other thing happens. It’s never going to happen unless you start.

So, make this week be the week you hear “GO!” – and you are off and running!

Is it Spring already?

First cherry blossom

Well, well, well, look at that! The first cherry blossom of the year (the first I’ve seen anyway).

It might not actually be Spring yet, but it must be just around the corner.

I love the Spring. It feels like such a time of new beginnings, of renewal, of re-growth, of emergence and delicate but determined first steps towards a flourishing abundant expression of the Life Force.

Bon Printemps! (“prins” from ancient French for “premier” or “first” and “temps” for a time, or a season)

(for readers in the Southern hemisphere, enjoy your emerging autumn!)

Magritte gets an idea?

Magritte gets an idea
I often have the experience that I take a photo, then when I get home and upload it onto my iPad or my Mac, I see it with new eyes, and those eyes see something I swear the old ones didn’t see when I took the shot!

Here is an example. I saw these trees and did my usual……moved about a bit changing my angle of view until I was happy with what I saw. Then I clicked.

Now I’m home, I see something else entirely, and it makes me wonder if this kind of view inspired Magritte….

In the cracks in reality

Ooh, what’s that up there?

No, not the window, or the plant, but, there in the crack in that great beam?

That wee thing……

Zzzz

Lovely.

Isn’t it often the wee things which make all the difference?

Isn’t it the art, the myth and the imagination which slips into the everyday structures, the wood, and the brick and the stone, which daily re-enchants the apparently ordinary?

Can you see the moon?

Moon over mulberry

Can you see the moon?
I know, this is like one of those old “spot the ball” games, but see if you can spot where the moon is in this photo.

Moon in the clouds

Can you see it now? Here’s what phase it is at, and where it is in relation to the clouds in that photo.

Crescent moon

Ah, there it is….lovely, isn’t it?

So now you know exactly what you are looking for, try again –

Moon over mulberry

Two things to think about – one is, isn’t it easier to see something when you know what you are looking for? And the other is, how many of us are aware what phase the moon is in TODAY?

Knowing the flow

sun, air, water, sand

We talk about “going with the flow“, almost as if it is the opposite of “going against the grain”.

But flow is not always smooth. Flow can be soft and easy, but it can be powerful and turbulent too.

When I was walking along this beach I was aware of the flow of the air on my face, the flow of the heat from the sun, the flow of the light through the sky, onto the water and the sand making it sparkle and shine. I was aware of the flow of the tides, as the sea receded to reveal silver sand and countless shells. Then suddenly there was a surge of sound. A rushing, white, world-filling sound. I looked up from the shells to the edge of the sea and saw a wave running up fast onto the beach. The water crashed onto the wet sand, fizzed and foamed, and was gone. In that moment I was aware of the flow of energy in the vast sea.

Flow is my verb for this week, from my A to Z of Becoming.

How can we “go with flow”?

I think it all begins by becoming aware of it.

I think it can begin by feeling the flow – the flow of the air in the wind, the flow of temperature in heat and in coolness on your skin, the flow of light as it sparkles and shines and creates shadows, the flow of water in the movement of the tides, the waves and the clouds, the flow of sound in the songs of the birds, the crashing of waves on a beach, the gurgling of water in a stream, the noise of the raindrops hitting the windows, the flow of scents as you pass a bakers or stand at the edge of the ocean….

There are many ways to experience flow. Why not start this way? Deliberately, consciously choose to “look out for”, to become aware of, to notice, THE FLOW.

Active exploring

beachcombing

This week’s A to Z of Becoming verb has been “exploring” – actively choosing to go and explore something with that spirit of curiosity and open minded wonder which pretty much guarantees you are going to find something which makes you go……..”look at this!”

Well, what better kind of active exploring is there than beachcombing?

Not only are you likely to be saying “Look at this!” repeatedly, but the slow speed required to do beachcombing is so relaxing.

Why not schedule in some beachcombing in your year ahead?

Subtle rainbow

subtle rainbow

Sometimes it’s not the most spectacular, vivid, bright or noisy phenomena which catch our attention.

As I looked out the window the other evening, just before the sun went down west of my field of vision, I saw this flickering colour in the clouds straight ahead.

It’s a sort of rainbow. A little scattering of the last light of the day through some prism in the clouds.

I’ve never seen this phenomenon before. The sun was a good 30 degrees to the west of where this occurred and there was no visible direct link between the position of the sun and this little shining strip of colours.

Quite subtle. It would have been easy to miss. And yet both striking and totally enthralling.

It lasted for about five minutes, then faded before the sun dropped below the horizon.

Oh, and who doesn’t like a sunset – so here’s what the setting sun looked like a few minutes later –

Shades of countryside

Sometimes when you look towards the horizon as the sun is setting, you can see what seems like layer after layer of differently shaded countryside.

I love that.

Beautiful.
