I woke up this morning and looked outside. Thick fog. I couldn’t see more than a couple of hundred yards. Everything I could see was covered in white, icy frost. Brrr…… How horrid! At least it’s Sunday, and I can stay warm and cosy, tucked up inside my house!
Then I thought, hang on a minute, bet there are some amazing photos I could take out there. So I got wrapped up nice and warm, picked up my D70, and headed out along the country lane. Here’s some of the things I saw..
a frozen web……
ice frozen onto the wire of a fence turning it into razor wire……
how ice doesn’t form symmetrically on a leaf….
and how it doesn’t form symmetrically on a berry….
the amazing patterns it makes when puddles freeze…..
the trees at the foot of the castle turning into a Christmas card….
frosted oak leaves……
frozen roses with thorns of ice growing out of their petals……
and, on this St Andrew’s Day, Robert Burns, covered in frozen webs….
I’m glad I went out and took a walk.
God, those are magnificent shots… I wish I could be there too!
I’M glad you went out, too (though I can totally sympathise with your desire to stay in and warm)! How wonderful! Thank you!
Things here in New England haven’t quite gotten too cold yet. It was ten degrees on the top of Mount Washington this morning, but the weather there is always horrid, so that’s not really a good yardstick. It’s supposed to approach 50 in Boston tomorrow, and I’m hoping that the mild weather hangs on until the Chili family can go out and hunt down its Christmas tree the weekend after next. I’m not counting on it, of course, but one can always hope…
Hi Bob,
Those are AMAZING photos! Just beautiful!
The webs on Robbie are so intriguing, I suspect they would be invisible or not noticeable except for the frost! Such an interesting home for an ingenious Scottish spider.
I wonder if the asymmetric crystals are growing in the direction of the wind?
An excellent day for a walk indeed!
All the best.
What fantastic pictures, thanks for sharing them. The Burns shot is priceless! (Worth sending to the BBC for their round up?)
Absolutely amazing!

No, steve, I haven’t thought about any exhibits!
Really really fantastic, thank you.

I am so glad you did bring your camera! Photos are a way to show others what we’ve seen, and with luck they last even after we are dust.
Will you be making your BLURB book again next year???
thank you for taking the time to share your new insights and images…sometimes, when we are willing to be a little uncomfortable we learn to truly appreciate what life has to offer….thanks for reminding me… maureenlynne
